FYE
FYE
The weather was cozy in Montesay town. The arrival of spring came with a warm and comforting air, which smelled of joy, contentment and happiness. Ironically, Elijah Kenner never felt so hopeless, the optimistic and bright seventeen year old soul was now wandering in darkness vulnerable; and on the verge of giving up.
Sitting near the graveyards of his family, he went through the names of the people who passed away belonging to the Kenner family which was one of the founding families of Montesay Town. A chuckle left his mouth when he came across the bold words engraved on a grave:
ELIJAH KENNER
1908 – 2007
A BELOVED HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDPA AND A GREAT GRANDFATHER.
A SOUL TO BE REMEMBERED.
WE WILL MISS YOU.
His parents had named him after his great grandfather. The way his parents admired and talked about Elijah Sr. was heartwarming. Elijah Sr. had died when Elijah Jr. was a four year old kid. He remembered the loving old man’s wrinkled face, his kind smile, the mischievous and childlike fire in his eyes and of course his booming contagious laughter.
He sighed and ran his fingers through his lustrous raven black hair, his crystal blue eyes shimmering with tears. He could not help but resent the cruel and merciless ways of destiny. Fate was repeating an agonizing fragment of history.
His fifteen year old sister, Freya Kenner who was suffering from Leukemia, was in a state of coma. Doctors had given up hope and she could be encaged in the shackles of death anytime soon.
His sister was named after Freya Kenner Sr. who was his great grand aunt and younger sister of Elijah Sr. who died at a very young age. She was named as Freya as Elijah Sr. had always talked about her and he had missed his sister terribly.
While gazing at the tombstones he could not digest the fact that his little sister would be joining them soon. A cute voice broke him out of his inner turmoil.
“Hey, why are you crying?” He looked around to find an adorable little girl not older than eight dressed in a very unusual old fashioned way in a knee length checkered frock with a frill collar and a bow in her bob-cut hair. He assumed it was a Halloween costume and the girl was collecting chocolates for ‘Trick and Treat’. Composing his face into a small smile he replied in a soft tone, “Nothing much dear. My sister is sick and I am worried about her.”
Her mouth formed into a ‘O’ shape and she replied “Ohh, don’t worry I have the perfect cure for it and by the way I am Fye.” Saying this she picked up a white flower lying beside one of the tombs and handed it to him saying, “The juice of the petals of this flower when injected into her body will cure her. Now go hurry to the hospital to your sister!”
It had been a couple of days since his sister woke up from coma perfectly fine without a single sign of leukemia in her body. The doctors called it a miracle and his parents called it god’s grace. Only he knew what had actually happened. Turns out, the remedy of the girl unexpectedly worked. He also came to know that Elijah Sr. always referred to his sister as Fye. When he learned about this, he searched the whole town for Fye, but he didn’t find her.
He went to the graveyard near the tombstone of Freya Kenner Sr. He didn’t find anyone there. Suddenly there was a whoosh of gentle breeze and he felt a soft kiss on his forehead promising love, support and protection.
Elijah's face lit up as the epiphany hit him, his smile widening with the realization that had suddenly dawned.
